Dan Barnes, D.O.

Dr. Barnes has served as president of FirstHealth Physician Group and vice president for Care Transitions and Oncology, since January 2012. In this role he directly supervises hospice & palliative care, home care, behavioral services, oncology, and all employed providers of FirstHealth. As FirstHealth Physician Group president, he is responsible for medical oversight, personnel evaluations, operational performance and provider issues. In addition, Dr. Barnes continues to actively practice medicine in FirstHealth’s Concierge Medicine Clinic and the Transition Care Clinic. Dr. Barnes reports directly to the CEO.

Education/Experience: Dr. Barnes received his medical degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed both his internal medicine internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in Texas and is board certified in internal medicine. Dr. Barnes joined FirstHealth Hospitalist Services while completing an assignment as a physician at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg.

During a deployment to Iraq, he received the Surgeon General Award for developing a mobile clinic to help meet the underserved medical needs of Iraqi citizens in remote areas of the Sunni Triangle. Dr. Barnes became medical director for FirstHealth Hospitalist Services in 2007 and was the vice chair of Moore Regional’s Department of Medicine from 2010-2012; and the chair of the Department of Medicine from 2013-2014. He helped design and launch the FirstHealth Physician Group and serves on its Executive Council. Dr. Barnes helped design and implement the FirstHealth Transfer Center and serves as the medical director for this service. Dr. Barnes also led the effort to launch, design and implement the FirstHealth Transition Care Clinics. He provides clinical oversight of this service. He also helped with the development of HealthNC+, a clinically aligned network.

Professional/Community Activities: Dr. Barnes serves on the Moore Free Care Clinic Board.
