FirstHealth Neurosurgery Welcomes Teddy E. Kim, M.D.

Dr. Teddy KimPINEHURST—FirstHealth of the Carolinas recently expanded its team of expert neurosurgery providers with the addition of neurosurgeon Teddy Kim, M.D.

Dr. Kim joins James Walker, M.D., and Cynthia Z. Africk, M.D., at FirstHealth Neurosurgery.

Dr. Kim earned his bachelor’s degree in bioengineering, animal physiology/neuroscience and master’s degree in molecular biology from the University of California San Diego where he went on to earn his medical degree. He completed his residency in neurosurgery and a complex spine deformity fellowship in neurosurgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Dr. Kim became interested in medicine at a young age after experiencing the loss of his father to osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. “I appreciate the opportunity I now have to help patients in their most dire time of need,” he said.

In addition to adult degenerative scoliosis and complex spine surgery, Dr. Kim has a strong interest in treating brain tumors.

“I was attracted to neurosurgery because of the breadth of range the specialty covers,” he said. “I am committed to providing quality care in all aspects of neurosurgery ranging from brain tumors to degenerative spinal disorders.”

Originally from California, Dr. Kim enjoys the sense of community that the Sandhills area offers. His wife, Kathryn, is a dentist and will soon begin practicing in the area. She was born and raised in North Carolina, which led them to stay in the area following Dr. Kim’s fellowship. They enjoy horses and golf, which makes the Sandhills area a natural fit for their family.
