Vascular & Vein Care
The FirstHealth Vascular & Vein team is available to provide specialized medical care in central NC to patients experiencing vascular and vein-related problems. Our skilled vascular surgeons perform a variety of surgical and other medical treatments in Moore, Lee and Hoke counties.
Vascular Disease
Vascular surgeons are physicians who have advanced training and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of disease affecting the circulatory system excluding the heart. This includes diseases affecting the carotid arteries, the two arteries that supply blood to the brain; the aorta, the main artery of the chest, abdomen and the peripheral arteries which supply blood to the extremities. Vascular Surgeons also treat disease affecting the veins, including chronic venous insufficiency, phlebitis, varicose veins and spider veins.
Vein Care
We offer minimally invasive treatment of spider and varicose veins. Our physicians are the only local specialists trained to offer the full range of treatment from the latest catheter based techniques to traditional procedures such as Ablation, Sclerotherapy and Phlebectomy.
Procedures & Treatments
Minimally invasive atherectomy - We offer minimally invasive procedures for a number of vascular diseases and other conditions related to the circulatory and vascular system, including:
- Peripheral vascular disease (PVD or PAD)
- Carotid artery disease (CAS)
- Venous disease (Varicose and Spider Veins)
- Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA)
- End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Vascular Wound Care Management
Lower Extremity Revascularization- an operation that is intended to improve the blood flow to your lower extremities to assist with symptoms of leg pain or weakness (claudication) or to assist with improving blood flow to help heal a wound.
Dialysis access creation and management - Dialysis access surgery or vascular access surgery is performed before dialysis, enabling effective treatment of End Stage Renal Disease. Our Vascular Surgeons provide several types of access surgery options for both forms of dialysis. Arteriovenous (AV) fistula or arteriovenous grafts are typically used for hemodialysis, whereas peritoneal dialysis access (PD Catheter) typically involves inserting a long, silicone-based tube into the abdomen.
Vein care including varicose and spider vein treatment - Varicose veins and spider veins are two of the most common vein conditions. Varicose veins are large, bulging veins caused by weakness in the vein wall or venous reflux disease, whereas spider veins are small, dilated veins near the surface of the skin. Depending on your individual needs, one or more of the following procedures may be recommended.
- Sclerotherapy – This procedure involves use of a very small needle to inject a hypertonic saline solution into the vein. The solution irritates the vein lining, causing the vein to shrink, close off, and eventually disappear. Multiple veins may be injected during a single treatment session, and treatment sessions last for around 30 minutes to an hour.
- Foam Sclerotherapy – A procedure similar to traditional sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy is usually used on larger varicose veins. The solution Sotradecol or Polidocanol is mixed with air, creating a foam. When injected inside a vein, the foam displaces the blood rather than mixing with it, forming a better contact with the vein wall.
- VNUS Closure Procedure – VNUS closure is a minimally invasive radiofrequency procedure that treats varicose veins and their underlying cause(s) with little or no pain.
- Micro-Phlebectomy – This surgical procedure involves the removal of veins through tiny incisions.
Moore Regional Hospital and Moore Regional Hospital - Richmond offer vascular radiology labs that provide diagnostic testing for blood vessel problems that occur outside the heart.
The two most common tests are both non-invasive Doppler Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Angiography.
