Signs of an Overdose 

Call 911

If someone you are with has signs of an opioid overdose, seek medical assistance: Call 911. Start rescue breathing and administer naloxone/Narcan while waiting for help to arrive.

Other signs include:

  • Not breathing
  • Turning blue
  • Deep snoring
  • Vomiting
  • Gasping
  • Gurgling

Risk Factors for Overdose

  • Mixing different types of drugs (opiates with alcohol and/or benzodiazepines)
  • Quality and difference in purity levels based on a batch
  • Low tolerance due to not using opiates after incarceration, detox or a drug-free treatment
  • Using alone behind locked door, unable to be found
  • Compromised health due to an infection, lack of sleep
  • Stressed or new environment
