Pharmacy Residency Programs

The FirstHealth of the Carolinas postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop clinical pharmacist practitioners with the knowledge, skills and abilities defined in educational competency areas, goals and objectives.

After completion of the PGY-1 pharmacy program, residents will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership and education. You will be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certificiation in pharmacotherapy (i.e. BCPS) and to pursue advanced education and training opportunities, including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Requirements

  • Completion of application materials
  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Eligibility for licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of North Carolina

Salary/Benefits

  • Approximately $51,000 salary
  • Benefits package equivalent to full-time employee with FirstHealth of the Carolinas
  • Travel allowances for professional meetings
    • ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (December)
    • Southeastern Regional Residency Conference (April)

Service/Staffing

  • Staff every fourth weekend
  • Work one of two winter holidays (Thanksgiving or Christmas)
  • Staff 2-hour weekday block once weekly

Residency Rotations Required

  • Orientation (1 week)
  • Clinical Consult Service (4 weeks) 
  • Critical care (8 weeks)
  • Emergency Medicine (8 weeks)
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship (4 weeks)
  • Ambulatory Care (4 weeks) - resident to select one of the following:
    • Cardiology
    • OPAT
    • Specialty Pharmacy 
  • Pharmacy Practice Management (longitudinal) - includes PN&T Committee, Medication Safety Committee and IRB Committee
  • Pharmacy Practice I (5 weeks) 
  • Pharmacy Practice II (longitudinal - 36 weeks)
  • Education (longitudinal)
  • Practice-based Project (longitudinal)

Electives (4 weeks each)

  • Oncology
  • Critical Care II 
  • Neonatal Intensive Care 
  • Emergency Medicine II 
  • Infectious Disease
  • Pharmacy Administration
  • Acute Care Transitions
  • Pharmacy Operations Management 
  • Additional elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability
